The Evening Wind-Down: How to Help Your Baby Settle and Sleep Faster at Night



 Every parent knows the feeling. The kettle has just boiled, you’re ready for a well-deserved cuppa, but your little one is wide awake and ready to party. Getting a baby to settle quickly isn’t about magic; it’s about creating a consistent, calming rhythm that signals to their busy brains that the day is finally over.

Here at Cecily Baby & Co., we know that navigating those evening hours can be a challenge. Below, we’ve put together our top tips to help your baby drift off faster, giving them the rest they need and giving you your evenings back.

1. Embrace a Screen-Free Wind-Down

With the hustle and bustle of modern life, it is incredibly easy to rely on the telly or a tablet to keep a fussy baby entertained before bed. However, the blue light emitted from screens can suppress melatonin (the sleep hormone), making it much harder for them to nod off.

Instead of screens, transition to a tactile, sensory-focused evening routine about an hour before bedtime. Engaging them with quiet, screen-free activities—like playing with smooth wooden toys or exploring sensory fabric books—helps lower their heart rate and gently prepares their nervous system for rest.

2. Dress for the Great British Weather

Our unpredictable UK weather is notoriously tricky to navigate, especially when dressing a baby for the night. A baby who is too hot or too chilly will struggle to fall asleep and is more likely to wake up in the early hours.

Focus on breathable, high-quality fabrics that are gentle on their skin. Layering is key! Rather than relying on heavy blankets, which can be kicked off, opt for a well-fitted baby sleeping bag with the appropriate Tog rating for the season.

3. The Classic 'Bath, Book, Bed' Routine

Babies and toddlers thrive on predictability. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine acts as a powerful cue that sleep is coming.

  • The Bath: A warm (not hot) bath helps to slightly drop their core body temperature once they get out, which naturally induces sleepiness.

  • The Book: Snuggling up with a favourite story or softly singing a lullaby provides comfort and connection.

  • The Bed: Keep the bedroom environment dim and quiet. A dark room is essential, especially during those bright British summer evenings when the sun is still shining at 9 PM! Blackout blinds are an absolute must-have for the nursery.

4. Keep an Eye on the Clock (Avoid Overtiredness)

It sounds counterintuitive, but keeping your baby up later will not make them fall asleep faster. In fact, an overtired baby produces cortisol and adrenaline, making them hyperactive and much harder to settle. Keep a close eye on their wake windows and look out for early sleepy cues like staring blankly, rubbing their eyes, or pulling at their ears. As soon as you spot these, it’s time to start the wind-down routine.
